Hi! My name is Ashwini Selvakumaran and I am one of the co-leads for the COVID-19 Perspectives Project. I’m an incoming third-year student at the University of Toronto, majoring in Peace, Conflict and Justice studies with a double minor in Diaspora and Transnational studies and English.⁣

Throughout my life I’ve lived in Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Yemen, New York and Canada where I’ve observed matters such as poverty, gender inequality, unequal access to education and climate change. These lived experiences solidified my passion to mobilize youth into tangible action and become a lifelong advocate for these issues. ⁣

My role in our project involves spearheading Spotlight Mondays, overseeing our social media and compiling and writing the stories for our e-book, alongside working together with my fellow co-lead Aishwarya in data collection and analysis. As an avid story-teller and writer, I wanted to partake in a project that allows youth across the world to share their voices and contribute directly to global action. I’m so excited about our project and I can’t wait to see where this journey will take us!⁣

Hi! My name is Aishwarya Patel and I am one of the co-leads for the COVID-19 Perspectives Project. I am an incoming third-year student at the University of Toronto pursuing a major in music as a pianist and composer as well as a minor in Political Science with two certificates in Music Health and Music Technology. ⁣

The powerful cadences of personal growth that I have gained from my experiences living in Zimbabwe, Canada and the United States have resonated in me and cultivated the roots of my desire to give back to my community. The innumerable difficulties and harsh injustices that I have witnessed many face, has engraved in me a deep compassion for others which will guide me throughout my life in championing efforts against these plights. ⁣

My role in our project is primarily as the data collector and analyst, artistic designer, and conductor of Weekly Quote Wednesdays as well as working alongside with my co-leader, Ashwini, in managing our social media pages, and compiling and organizing the artistic and literary works for our e-book. I am so grateful to be working on a project that will weave together the stories of many and hopefully inspire students, from many parts of the world, to raise their voices in a united effort to actively participate in youth-led pursuits in response to world affairs.⁣

The overwhelming response we have received has been unbelievable and we are both profoundly grateful for all your support thus far! Greatly looking forward to our exciting journey ahead!
